Susannah Circle Susannah Circle
The Susannah Circle is named after Susannah Wesley, who is known as the “Mother of Methodism.” One of her sons, John Wesley, laid the foundation of the Methodist church while another son, Charles Wesley, was also a Methodist leader who wrote thousands of hymns.
Our Circle Chairperson is Carol Watchorn, and she has held this position since approximately 2005. Lucy Brewer is the treasurer, and Vickie Nickles is the Sunshine point of contact. The Circle meets monthly (except in the winter) at 1:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday in the Lounge. The circle currently has approximately 24 members and is open to all adult ages. Occasionally a Circle luncheon is planned, separate from Circle meetings.
The current Susannah Circle has been in existence since at least the 1970s, if not longer. It is one of four or five Circles within the church that were once part of The United Methodist Women, a District and Conference connection. Today, this Circcle is the only existing Circle at Enon UMC; and we are no longer connected with The United Methodist Women.
The monthly agenda format usually begins with our Mission Statement, scripture for the day, devotions, prayer requests, and then a short program, spiritual in nature. Members sign up to provide a program of their choice at least once every two years. The Circle is always looking for new ideas for programs. At times there may be a guest speaker–it is up to the member giving the program. The person giving the program has the choice of which charitable activity we support that month (see below).
The Susannah Circle is the main source of meals for the Bereavement Committee–that is one of our missions. We also support various charities throughout the year including Enon Emergency Relief and Growing Knights, and we acquire supplies for the Enon UMC kitchen.
The Susannah Circle is a fabulous group of ladies who love to be together and who love our Lord. Join us!
Some of the Charities We Have Supported
4 Paws for Ability:
Circle Sister Leona Miller chose 4 Paws for the November 2022 meeting and charity. Ms. KaLynn Clark, Development Director (pictured at right with Pastor Heather), brought a 4 Paws service dog in training and shared lots of information about the scope of the 4 Paws mission. At any given time, there are approximately 400 dogs in the 4 Paws pipeline (from breeding to placement), and the dogs are trained to fulfill a variety of needs. 4 Paws also does not have an age limit, so even young children in need can qualify for a 4 Paw service dog. 4 Paws fulfills needs across the country!
Clark County SPCA: Circle Sister Leona Miller chose SPCA as the targeted charity during one meeting, and she talked with the SPCA about what their needs were at that time. Leona learned about a starving horse, Dakota, who was found abandoned in a field in December 2019 and had been placed in an SPCA foster home. Dakota had many needs, and the Circle donated to her care. Dakota quickly gained weight and strength, and she eventually became part of a loving family with three little girls who rode her and showed her! Sadly, in June 2021, Dakota was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to be euthanized. Dakota’s family shared: “She was the horse that we all trusted with any age. All the neighborhood kids brushed and loved her every weekend. She was kind and so gentle. It’s not just going to be hard on my kids but everyone around us.” Dakota lived her very best life in the time she had with her family, and she was dearly loved.
