Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted
Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

Over the years, Enon UMC has provided many bereavement meals for the family of deceased members (or regular attendees) of our church.  It’s a tradition and an honor to assist the family.

In June 2022, Sherry Bostick leads the Bereavement Committee. Sherry works with Pastor Heather to ascertain family wishes regarding a meal or refreshments following the service and graveside ceremony then contacts the family regarding details and to get an estimate of the number of people for which we need to prepare.

Organizing a meal requires hefty logistics skills and includes the following: phone calls, menu planning, coordinating communications with Enon’s Administrative Assistant, ordering and picking up food, coordinating congregation food donations, working with Trustees to set up Roth Hall, decorating tables, preparing beverages, scheduling servers, arranging food tables, cutting desserts, timing food readiness with family arrival, managing and packing leftovers, and cleaning up.

Carol Watchorn, who led the Bereavement Committee for several years and stepped down in early 2022, summed up the spirit of these special meals: “This is a very important service that we provide for Enon UMC; and although bittersweet, it’s a time we all can enjoy the fellowship. It is very rewarding.”
