Memorial Paver Garden
In 2018, former Enon UMC Secretary Lin Tranter mentioned to Trustee Chair Dave Norman that she thought the church needed an outside area for prayer and meditation. This area could also be used by the Enon UMC Preschool as an outside area for story time, etc. Dave approached Jeff and Kris Collingsworth about the possibility of completing such an area as an Eagle Scout project. Erik Collingsworth, an Enon UMC Preschool alumnus and member of Enon UMC, decided the Memorial Paver Garden would be his Eagle Scout project.
Erik discussed the layout and location specifics with the Trustees, then he presented his Eagle Scout project to the Troop 17 BSA committee in October 2018. After approval, funds were raised through the sale of engraved paver stones and donations. One of the black granite benches was donated by Cliff Vernon of Set n Stone Monuments. Ground broke in May 2019, and the project began with digging a 3-foot deep foundation for each granite bench. This depth ensured the concrete base was below the frost line, minimizing shifting of the benches in the future.
Once the concrete was poured, the benches were placed by Set N Stone Monuments. The area for the paver stones was then dug out deeply enough for a base of gravel and sand. Gravel was placed and compacted, then the sand was installed. Paver stones were then installed and sand placed in between each paver. With labor provided by numerous adults and youth members of Enon UMC’s Boy Scout Troop 17, the project was completed on July 23, 2019.
