Human Relations Day

Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God — Proverbs 14:31 (NIV)

In The United Methodist Church, Human Relations Day Sunday is one of six Special Sundays with offerings supporting a particular ministry. On the Sunday before the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, our designated gifts benefit neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services, and work with at-risk teens through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program.

Human Relations Sunday is rooted in the belief that everyone has the right to reach their full potential. The United Methodist Church cares about acknowledging the overlooked and ignored and being a voice for the voiceless.

Combined Human Relations Day donation history (toward ministries funded by this special Sunday offering):
2020: $422,731
2019: $471,659
2018: $493,667
2017: $544,599
These donations are administered by the General Board of Global Ministries and the General Board of Church and Society. Learn more about Human Relations Day Sunday in the video below. See our Give page for guidance on special donations.
